The haori is a traditional Japanese jacket, originally worn only by men during the Edo period, but later adopted by women starting from the Meiji era (1868–1912). Today, it is a versatile garment that can elevate any outfit, whether worn as a cover-up or a mini-dress.
This haori is made from authentic raw tsumugi silk, a fabric dating back to the Edo period (1603-1868), when rural weavers hand-spun short silk fibers to create everyday garments. Unlike shiny silk, tsumugi features a matte and delicately textured surface that becomes smoother over time. The light and dark red checkered color makes it instantly recognizable and refined.
Since most tsumugi garments were made as full kimono sets, finding a single haori today is extremely rare. Valued for its warmth, durability, and understated elegance, this haori embodies the spirit of traditional artisanal textiles.
Entirely handmade in Japan, it bears witness to Japanese tailoring art and attention to detail. It comes with haori-himo, the braided and embroidered ties used to close the haori at the front, allowing you to personalize your style.
This haori is perfect for any occasion: it can be worn as a cover-up for an elegant and sophisticated look, or as a mini-dress for a touch of originality.
Condition: vintage in excellent condition, with two very small dark spots (approx. 1 mm) on the back edge of the left sleeve, which attest to its authenticity and history.
