The "new teas": a special tasting
On Saturday July 18 at 10:30 AM, we invite you on a sensory journey to discover shincha (新茶, “new tea”), the first and most prized green teas of the year. We will start from Shizuoka Prefecture, land of Mount Fuji and "fukamushicha" (deep-steamed tea), passing through Kyoto, the birthplace of green tea, Fukuoka, Kochi, and Nagasaki, until we reach the furthest point, Tanegashima, where tea sprouts with the beginning of spring.
This truly special meeting will allow you to taste unique and precious teas, carefully selected during our recent trip to Japan, directly from expert and trusted farmers. A unique opportunity to travel to Japan without leaving Italy!
Shincha Tasting 2026: what we are going to taste
You will have the opportunity to taste 6 exceptional shincha, each with its own unique characteristics:
-
Shincha "Ohashiri" from Higashiyamacha (Kakegawa, Shizuoka): produced with the first spring buds (harvested April 25) grown naturally using the "chagusaba" technique (UNESCO heritage). The intense steaming "fukamushi" gives the tea its characteristic vivid green color and a sweet, refreshing aroma.
-
Shincha "Kyo no Hana" from Ocha no Kanbayashi (Uji, Kyoto): the most prestigious among the shincha from the historic Ocha no Kanbayashi company (founded in 1558). From a base of Saemidori cultivar, grown in Wazuka village by a single farming family (single-origin), comes a superb, elegant tea rich in umami.
-
Shincha "Kiri no Kiwami" from Ikegawa Tea Farm (Niyodogawa, Kochi): extremely rare green tea produced in Kochi, one of the four prefectures of Shikoku. For several generations, six farming families have joined together to create unique and distinctive teas, like this shincha, the first harvest of the year, with an intense, fresh, umami aroma.
-
Shincha "Yamakiri" from Chiyonoen (Yame, Fukuoka): a sencha with an aroma as fresh as the mist among the Yabe mountains, where it's grown and harvested by the Harashima family in early spring. Blend of ancient Yabukita plants, with a balanced yet deep flavor.
-
Shincha "Nagomi" from Ooyama Seichaen (Sonogi, Nagasaki): rare green tea typical of Kyushu "tamaryokucha" (curled-leaf tea), single-origin, blend of fresh Yabukita and sweet Saemidori. Splendid emerald green leaves and liquor, fruity and incredibly umami aroma.
-
Shincha "Ohashiri" from Iba Takahiro Tea Garden (Tanegashima, Kagoshima): a record-breaking shincha! The first tea to be harvested in all of Japan, at the end of March. Single-origin and single-cultivar (the rare Kuritawase), this shincha has a delicate, umami aroma, with creamy and toasted notes.
