Thanks to teamwork where each artisan handles a specific production stage, the Gyokko workshop produces unique, beautiful, and consistent pieces on a large scale without using molds. This method allows more people to appreciate handmade ceramics, bringing the art and tradition of Tokoname into homes worldwide.
Tokoname ceramics (常滑焼, Tokoname-yaki) is one of Japans six ancient ceramic traditions (Rokkōyō), originating from the city of Tokoname in Aichi prefecture. It stands out for its mineral-rich local clay, which gives the ceramics a characteristic reddish-brown color and exceptional strength.
Unlike other Japanese ceramics, such as Mino-yaki (renowned for its versatility and bright colors) or Bizen-yaki (appreciated for its natural unglazed finish), Tokoname ceramics are particularly suited for producing teapots (shudei) and tea ceremony items, thanks to their ability to retain heat and enhance the teas flavor. Furthermore, its porous surface and natural glaze make it ideal for daily use, combining tradition, functionality, and durability.

Description
The art of Tokoname in a teapot
The “Gyokko yohen” kyusu is a stunning traditional Japanese teapot completely handmade in Tokoname (Aichi pref.) by Master Gyokko’s (玉光) studio. Tokoname is one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns (Rokkōyō). It is renowned for its high-quality clay, rich in minerals that enhance and improve the flavor of the tea upon contact.
A unique work of art
This kyusu is made of unglazed “kokudei” black ceramic, embellished with “hi-yohen” (火窯変) and “matsukawa” (松皮) effects.
The term “hi-yohen” refers to the “color transformation” caused by direct contact with the kiln’s flame and ash. This process creates natural, unique shades on the ceramic surface.
“Matsukawa” indicates a decorative technique that reproduces the texture of pine bark on the teapot’s surface, giving it an organic and refined look.
Each kyusu is a unique handcrafted piece, signed under the handle with Master Gyokko’s seal, certifying its authenticity and artistic value.
Practical and functional
The ceramic filter is located inside the teapot at the base of the spout to strain the leaves and ensure a clear, tasty tea. Additionally, the flat ergonomic shape, side handle, and integrated filter make it the ideal teapot. It is perfect for flawlessly preparing all your favorite Japanese green teas at home.
