Tokoname ceramics

Tokoname ceramics (常滑焼, Tokoname-yaki) is one of Japans six ancient ceramic traditions (Rokkōyō), originating from the city of Tokoname in Aichi prefecture. It stands out for its mineral-rich local clay, which gives the ceramics a characteristic reddish-brown color and exceptional strength.

Unlike other Japanese ceramics, such as Mino-yaki (renowned for its versatility and bright colors) or Bizen-yaki (appreciated for its natural unglazed finish), Tokoname ceramics are particularly suited for producing teapots (shudei) and tea ceremony items, thanks to their ability to retain heat and enhance the teas flavor. Furthermore, its porous surface and natural glaze make it ideal for daily use, combining tradition, functionality, and durability.
